Ernie Chambers vs Alleged Rape Victim

Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers is pissed off at alleged rape victim Bowen because she has the temerity to stand up to the asshole judge who banned the word “rape” in a rape trial.  So he’s suing God to make his little point:

Chambers said the lawsuit was triggered by a federal suit filed against a judge who recently barred words such as “rape” and “victim” from a sexual assault trial.

“This lawsuit having been filed and being of such questionable merit creates a circumstance where my lawsuit is appropriately filed,” Chambers said. “People might call it frivolous but if they read it they’ll see there are very serious issues I have raised.”

It is a very serious issue.  A woman may have been raped, and was prohibited from using appropriate language in her own defense.  And now she is being publicly lashed by a state senator.  That’s not all:

U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf, in an order last week, expressed doubts about whether Bowen’s lawsuit “has any legal basis whatsoever” and said sanctions may be imposed against Bowen and her attorneys if they fail to show cause for the lawsuit.

This goes beyond simply blaming the victim.  This is punish the victim, publicly, and leave them with only the most desperate and damaged recourse for justice.  Samhita (feministing) notes that Chambers is an otherwise good senator:

It is also extremely disappointing as Ernie Chambers is a well known civil rights activist and according to an interview in Mother Jones last year, “he’s been named the “angriest black man in Nebraska,” the “defender of the downtrodden,” and the “maverick of Omaha.” And it’s hard to deny that Chambers lives up to such colorful titles.” How can someone with such a reputation think in anyway that banning the word “rape” at a rape trial is justified, let alone something to parody?

The “defender of the downtrodden” just slammed his boot down onto Bowen’s neck and laughed.  I don’t think that title applies anymore.
